There’s a lot of alternative rock in the music from Mexican band Caifanes. Yet a love of King Crimson inspires frontman Saul Hernandez and guitarist Alejandro Marcovich to break new ground, creating a striking hybrid of British new wave, prog rock, and Latin percussion.
After a 15-year hiatus, the seminal rock band reunited at the annual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, attracting thousands of fans of rock en español while creating hundreds of more.
According to the band’s bio, the name Caifanes is derived from “1940′s Mexican Pachuco (zoot suiter) slang “Cai fan”, it’s equivalent in English would be something like ‘cool dude’.” And, folks–these guys are absolutely cool dudes–one with rhythms that stick. Preview some Caifanes, plus check out 10 other similar bands to rock out to on Cinco de Mayo!
