There’s been a long history of musicians partnering up with wrestlers but the latest venture, between The Smashing Pumpkins‘ Billy Corgan and indie wrestling company Resistance Pro, is one of the more surprising.

Billy Corgan will be helping the company get off its feet by endorsing local wrestling shows in his native Chicago – with a view to taking the company nationwide. Trends looks back at a few examples of wrestling and music coming together as one.

Even though The Smashing Pumpkins have been scrobbled 82,237,428 times, they can’t (as of yet, anyway) boast the bonus points of having collaborated with a wrestler on a track.

Those bonus points are held by artists such as Wyclef Jean and Motörhead. The former collaborated with one of the most well known wrestlers of all time on “It Doesn’t Matter – The Rock (AKA Dwayne Johnson), whilst Motörhead wrote the widely used theme song for Triple H – entitled “The Game”.

Wyclef Jean’s track “It Doesn’t Matter” was the first single from his album The Ecleftic: 2 Sides II A Book, released in 2000. It took The Rock’s trademark phrase into the music mainstream, with the track being scrobbled 44,415 times.

Although Triple H doesn’t feature on Motörhead’s track “The Game”, the track has been scrobbled 185,760 times and has been performed by the band at several major wrestling events – notably WrestleMania X-Seven and WrestleMania 21.

The Smashing Pumpkins’ scrobbles have seen a slight dip in the last twelve months – maybe this will be reversed as the band become exposed to a whole new market.
