Even if you’re never seen a single episode of Glee, chances are you gather that it’s a show about a high school glee club who covers a lot of trending songs. In their April 10th episode, they covered Gotye’s Somebody That I Used to Know and he shared his reaction publicly.
According to Spinner.com, Gotye found FOX’s musically propelled hit show to have been on-point in the instrumental department but the vocals rubbed him the wrong way.
“The vocals were that pop Glee style, ultra dry, sounded pretty tuned and the rock has no real sense, like it’s playing to you from a cardboard box,” he explained to Scotland’s Sunday Mail. He elaborated on his displeasure with the Glee cover to Australia’s Herald Sun that their rendition “made it sound dinky and wrong.”
“Dinky’s” always a fun word.
When the original artist is unhappy with a cover, everyone is unhappy. We’re curious if Gotye is a regular Glee viewer or just tuned in to see how they recreated his (and Kimbra’s) hit, currently #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Interestingly, the show took the duet in an all male direction, which might account for some of the “wrongness” in Gotye’s eyes, but that’s just our cheeky speculation.
The Spinner.com article makes the argument that Gotye should at least give Glee a slight nod of approval because they might have helped the song’s overwhelming popularity. But in a way he did: the instrumentals received praise. Plus, he was the musical guest on SNL (along with Kimbra) just four nights later. Not to mention that the song is literally stuck in your head this very moment.
Alright, if you’re curious, below is Glee‘s version of Somebody That I Used to Know:
