5. FOXYGEN – We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace and Magic (01.21.2013)
Foxygen is an American indie rock duo that was formed in Westlake Village, CA. After their formation in 2005, the band played around with experimental music which featured many influences from 60s psychedelia and avant-garde. In early 2011, they were discovered by famed producer Richard Swift, with whom they recorded their Take the Kids Off Broadway EP, which was also self-released at some point in mid-2011. Their first full-length album was released in July of 2012. The band’s sophomore album, We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace and Magic is scheduled to release on January 21st of this year.
4. LOCAL NATIVES – Hummingbird (01.29.2013)
Local Natives is an indie rock band based out of Silver Lake, Los Angeles and has gained a large fan following after their debut album release titled Gorilla Manor. The band started to attract the attention of the music press after playing nine shows at the SXSW music festival in Austin, TX. In 2011, they embarked on a European tour, opening for Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes. At Lollapalooza, the band announced that they built a new studio to finish their second full-length album, which Aaron Dessner of The National helped produce. Their sophomore album, Hummingbird will be released on January 29 (a day before the band is scheduled to play at The Fox in Oakland).
3. THE JOY FORMIDABLE – Wolf’s Law (01.21.2013)
The Welsh alternative rock band, The Joy Formidable, was formed in 2007 and currently resides in London, England. The band released their eight-track EP in early 2009 and spent the rest of that year touring the UK with Temper Trap and Passion Pit. In 2010, the band released their debut album, The Big Roar which blended a lovely mix of thick, textured noises with clear, shimmery pop hooks. The band’s second album Wolf’s Law is scheduled to be released on January 21st.
2. RA RA RIOT – Beta Love (01.21.2013)
Ra Ra Riot is an American indie rock band stationed in Syracuse, New York. The band formed in 2006 and started out playing in venues and houses around Syracuse University. Since then, they have released two full-length albums: The Rhumb Line and The Orchard. Chris Walla of Death Cab for Cutie mixed 9 out of the 10 tracks on The Orchard, while Rostam Batmanglij of Vampire Weekend mixed the remaining track. The band has played many festivals, including SXSW and Seaport Music Festival in New York City. The band is set to release their third album, Beta Love on January 22nd. [Listen]
1. THE AIRBORNE TOXIC EVENT – Such Hot Blood (04.26.2013)
The Airborne Toxic Event is known for its mix of rock music with orchestral arrangements, and is based in Los Feliz, CA. The indie rock band started to gain recognition and popularity in 2006, and was declared one of the “top 25 bands on MySpace” by Rolling Stone Magazine. In 2007, an indie label in the UK released a single from the band, and in support of the release, the band decided to embark on a ten-day tour in the UK. The Airborne Toxic Event has appeared on late night shows, including Late Night with Conan O’Brien and has also started a cause to raise awareness of a young Iranian girl that was killed during protests in Iran. The band held their awareness concert at the famous Walt Disney Concert Hall in 2010, and had many celebrities and fans backing them. The band has released two full length albums, The Airborne Toxic Event and All At Once, and is scheduled to play Coachella this Spring. Their third album, Such Hot Blood is expected to be in stores on April 26th of this year. [Listen to ‘Timeless’]
