On Friday (May 3) the San Francisco Giants celebrated Metallica Day at AT&T Park. The first annual festivities included special limited edition Metallica themed Giants gear and a special appearance from the band.

The day kicked off with lead singer and guitarist James Hetfield and guitarist Kirk Hammett performing the national anthem. The rock rendition was followed by drummer Lars Ulrich throwing out the ceremonial first pitch to Giants closer Sergio Romo.

The Giants have a long history of partnering with musicians with their annual Grateful Dead Tribute Night (August 9) and inviting the Bay Area natives for a night was a perfect fit for fans and the band.

“I think the Grateful Dead have their day,” Hetfield told reporters. “And we have a pretty loyal following ourselves. So I think we might be in the territory of the Dead as well. We’re very grateful to be a part of this. Hopefully it can continue and we’ll do it as long as we can.”

The Metallica-theme continued throughout the game between the reigning World Series champion Giants and the rival Los Angeles Dodgers with the alteration of Giants players’ photos on the main scoreboard to have heavy metal hairdos.

Though everyone enjoyed the partnership with the Giants, one member of the band was rooting for the away team Dodgers.

Bassist Robert Trujillo explained, “I actually followed the Dodgers back then, back in the Kirk Gibson years, Steve Garvey. It means a lot to me. It’s an honor to be here at this park, it’s one of the most beautiful ballparks in the U.S. and probably in the world even. It’s incredible. I don’t think any seat’s a bad seat here.”
