It’s a bit tough these days to find anyone who doesn’t like Nirvana. That goes for musicians too—many love Nirvana, and they pay tribute all the time. A lot of artists have covered Nirvana over the years—some of them go horrifically awry (as in the case with Miley Cyrus), but some of them are actually pretty awesome. The mark of the great Nirvana covers, though, is when the band doesn’t try to sound exactly like them.

Here are seven covers of Nirvana songs where artists retained their own sound, while still paying reverence to the group that changed rock music.

The Bad Plus covers ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’

Yuna covers ‘Come How You Are’

Herbie Hancock covers ‘All Apologies’

Tori Amos covers ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’

Lana Del Rey covers ‘Heart Shaped Box’

Charles Bradley covers ‘Stay Away’

Animal Collective covers ‘On a Plain’
