Astronaut Explains What Space Smells Like

By Bradford Hornsby

You may know that in space no one can hear you scream but did you know that you can’t smell so well either?

Back in 2013, astronaut and YouTube superstar Chris Hadfield explained that in space because your sinuses do not drain properly in minimal gravity that the sense of smell is dulled and altered.

In the past, many have claimed the airlock area smelled like “burnt steak” or “gunpowder”.

This week, astronaut Reid Wiseman tweeted from the International Space Station that he smelled space and it smelled like “wet clothes after rolling in snow.”

Wiseman has continued in Hadfield’s footsteps and posted some pretty amazing photos and vines from the ISS.
