‘Lucy’ Leads the Weekend Box Office With ‘Hercules’ in Tow

By Alyssa Pereira

Though July has been a very weak month at the box office, Universal’s Lucy took first place at the box office. The film didn’t blow any similar predecessors out of the water, but considering that the film was produced on a modest budget, it did pretty well overall.

The movie had a creative original (albeit scientifically incorrect) premise in “What if we could use more than 10% of our brains…”, and netting Scarlett Johansson as the action-ready main character sure didn’t hurt either—so its no surprise that Lucy performed so well its opening weekend.

Hercules, which stars The Rock (who is currently in town filming a disaster flick), came in second with a disappointing $29 million. Though it received a decent Cinema Score (B+), it will definitely not net profits exceeding $100 million, as Lucy will.

Other premieres this week included And So It Goes, a romantic comedy starring Michael Keaton and Diane Lane, and A Most Wanted Man. Wanted Man stars Philip Seymour Hoffman in what some are calling “his most significant role” as a German intelligence agent. The film has only opened in 361 theaters thus far—given its success already, expect a surge when it expands to more venues.
