Community Connection With Liz Saint John 08.17.2014

Liz Saint John interviews three guests every Sunday morning covering a variety of issues and topics. She talks with representatives from Bay Area non-profit organizations, documentary filmmakers, authors, and professors.

1. Filmmaker Jennifer Kroot talks about her new documentary To Be Takei: A Star’s Trek for Life, Libert and Love. The movie covers his time as a child in a Japanese-American internment camp in Arkansas, his television and film career, and his work as a marriage equality advocate.

2. Jay Banfield, Executive Director of Year Up, talks about the organization’s one-year program that provides intensive training for low-income young adults, ages 18-24, with a combination of hands-on skill development, college credits, corporate internships, and support.

3.Investigative journalist Nina Teicholz spent ten years studying the research on saturated fats and found that the bad rap on meat, butter, cheese, nuts and oils is not deserved. Her book The Big Fat Surprise: Why Butter, Meat & Cheese Belong in a Healthy Diet explains why many people believe saturated fats are bad and how the latest science is helping bring those foods back into our lives.
