Facebook Is Testing Out New ‘Satire’ Tag in News Feed

By Alyssa Pereira

Following many instances of Facebook users being fooled by satire news site headlines, Facebook has decided to implement a updated news feed feature. The site is currently testing including the conspicuous addition of the word “[SATIRE]” in their related articles list under news postings.

“We are running a small test which shows the text “[Satire]” in front of links to satirical articles in the related articles unit in News Feed,” a Facebook employee told Mashable. “This is because we received feedback that people wanted a clearer way to distinguish satirical articles from others in these units.”

Reportedly, the tests have been going on for about a month, but don’t include all satire sites as of yet. For example, The Onion‘s articles all receive the tag, whereas its sister site Clickhole don’t. The change comes in response to help prevent news publications, like previous victims ScienceNews and The Washington Postfrom sensationalizing stories that were actually parodies.
