There’s something deeply disturbing about unrelated imagery. For example, the second version music video for alt-J’s hit single “Left Hand Free.”
It follows the template of the first, pairing video footage of “young people having fun” with a song in which one man shoots another over a love triangle — basically the definition of unrelated imagery.
The second video takes a slightly different tack, making the setting more controlled — where the first was in the wild outdoors, the second is a pool party. Minus the treatment of the film (akin to an Instagram filter) and the overwhelming presence of one-piece swimsuits on the women, this could easily be part of a Katy Perry video.
This video, however, does eventually come to a storyline. Midway through we are alerted to the presence of a dark helicopter overhead, followed by the revelation that this party has armed guards. Total and unexplained chaos breaks out as the video closes, in a hail of gunfire.
